I guess you didn’t start a thread for it to be “liked” but to initiate some exchange of views on a subject. The title however may invite to sales promotion ‘in disguise’ as I said before and this risks making comments questionable if positive as being possible advertisement for a particular maker – or in reverse if negative as mistreatment of business etiquette. I know this may seem unavoidable in the ‘free world of internet’ but it may still be worth considering. It is different when speaking of makers out of business but my objection there was that we all have so little ‘reference material’ that individual opinions may risk distributing rumour more than fact. According to reports I have got there has been very little difference in delivered “reed steel qualities” at least for a years but certainly some differences occur. There have been brass and some iron alloys been used for reed making causing more difference in reed physics. The most important factor causing practical differences in “reed qualities” IS the processing.

Charles Jeffries and His Sons: Concertina Makers (Appendix 1)

The systems differ in: Because the concertina was developed nearly contemporaneously in England and Germany, systems can be broadly divided into English, German, and Anglo-German types. To a player proficient in one of these systems, a concertina constructed according to a different system may be quite unfamiliar. The most common concertina systems are listed below.

The list is not exhaustive, as the concertina is not only a venerable and widespread instrument, but also an evolving instrument: English type English style concertinas traditionally share several features:

A C. Jeffries Concertina with thirty-two bone buttons on pierced foliate brass ends, six-fold bellows.

Introducing the Holden Blackbird A few weeks ago I completed my second new concertina. For pragmatic reasons I chose to build an example of what is probably the most popular type of concertina sold today: Here is the specification of Holden No. All parts other than various screws made by myself in England from high quality materials, either by hand or on my little CNC milling machine everything visible on the outside of the instrument is hand made. Traditional long-scale concertina reeds, with hand-filed spring steel tongues closely fitted under a microscope into brass frames.

They are loud and responsive with good dynamic range and pitch stability. Seven fold black goatskin bellows with black leather-effect papers. Black Ebano a sustainable alternative to ebony action box walls. Laminated hardwood end boards for strength and stability with American walnut face veneer and a moulded English walnut border.

I used different shades of shellac for the central part and the border. Hand pierced fretwork to my own traditional-style design inspired by Victorian patterns. Sycamore reed pans rotated parallel-chamber arrangement with variable chamber depths.

Atlas Although Henry Mayhew will need little introduction to those familiar with Victorian London he was a journalist, novelist, playwright, travel writer, author of moralizing books for children, one of the founding editors of Punch, and, in a sense, a proto-sociologist , perhaps a few words of background are in order about his famous London Labour and the London Poor. After falling out with the publisher of the newspaper along the way over political matters, Mayhew continued the series independently, publishing new installments on a weekly basis throughout Finally, after breaking off work on the project altogether—he had to flee to Germany to escape his creditors—he picked it up once again in , at which time he interviewed a few other street musicians, including the young concertina player who plied his craft on the steamboats that ran up and down the Thames.

Though he plays primarily on the steamboats, he supplements his earnings there he seems to average about 5s. He plays entirely by ear.

Concertina — A concertina is a free-reed musical instrument, like the various accordions and the harmonica. It has a bellows, and buttons typically on both ends of it, when pressed, the buttons travel in the same direction as the bellows, unlike accordion buttons, which travel perpendicularly to the bellows. The concertina was developed in England and Germany, most likely independently, the English version was invented in by Sir Charles Wheatstone, while Carl Friedrich Uhlig announced the German version five years later, in Various forms of concertina are used for music, for the traditional musics of Ireland, England, and South Africa.

Because the concertina was developed nearly contemporaneously in England and Germany, systems can be divided into English, Anglo-German. To a player proficient in one of these systems, a concertina of a different system may be quite unfamiliar, the English concertina and the Duet concertina bear similarities in history and construction.

Both systems generally play a scale, and are unisonoric. Both these English-developed instruments are smaller than German concertinas, and tend to be hexagonal, though occasionally having 8,10, the English system alternates the notes of the scale between two hands, enabling rapid melodies. The Duet system places the low notes on the hand and high on the right. The English concertina is credited to Sir Charles Wheatstone, who first patented such a design in in Great Britain, Wheatstone was also the first to patent a Duet concertina, in The German concertinas, developed within Germany itself for its market and diaspora.

I’ve fooled around with them a bit, and getting a reasonably pleasant sound out of a concertina a simple,, unlike a violin, where the ‘torturing a cat’ phase lasts all too long. But it’s true that it sure isn’t obvious which button produces which note. It seems like it wouldn’t be too difficult one you got which button to push into your brain.

The size of this instrument is consistent with the vintage Wheatstone anglos. This instrument is well suited to all styles of music. It works very well for fast, single note Irish music and also is well suited for playing that involves more chords.

Then use your browser’s Back button to return to this page. Here’s a view of the left side of the instrument. If you compare this with the pictures of Darth on the previous page, you’ll immediately notice that a third row of buttons has been added.

That change permits a much greater range of harmonic possibilities. What may not be obvious to someone who doesn’t play the instrument is that there are four other new buttons as well. Two of these at the top of the inner C and G rows, one in the middle nearest the hand strap, and one near the top of the strap where it can be played with the thumb. And here’s the right side. The thumb button here is normal; it’s the “wind valve” present on all Anglos. But there are still four additional buttons beyond the ones added by the third row:
